God gets jealous Bible Study Series Part 1
Do you know what a false god is? A false god is anything or anyone that people put before GOD. If you have someone or something in your life that is more dear to you than your relationship with God-you are making Him feel jealousy over you. The second commandment of the Ten Commandments Exodus 20:3 is often ignored or taken lightly. God was very specific when He said, that we are not to have any gods before Him which includes material items and people, yes even family should not come before God. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Exodus 20:3 Historically, people have made false gods (idols or statues) of one type or another and worshiped these as if they could do something for them. God does not want us to make or worship any likeness of any thing that is in heaven, on or in the earth or the water rather than worship Him. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Exodus 20:4 The Lord gives one specific reason why you are not to bow down or serve anyone or anything except the Lord That reason is jealousy-God is a jealous God by His own admission. He also places a type of curse on those who do not obey this commandment; a curse that is handed down generation to generation up to four generations as punishment for disobeying Him and provoking His jealousy. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; Exodus 20:5 The Lord also states that He will show mercy on anyone that keeps His commandments And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. Exodus 20:6 The Lord was very specificwhen He described graven images The Lord identified graven images as anything or anyone which people put before Him in importance. These days people put many things before the Lord such as, cars, clothes, houses, money, family, friends etc. and the list goes on and on. Not surprisingly, it makes sense that when people make anything or anyone more important in their lives that God will get jealous. The Lord stated clearly, "I the Lord thy God am a jealous God!" Put the Lord First in your life. Make Him the most important one in your life, putting Him before all material things, physical things and yes even before family and friends. The Lord will make your relationships stronger and healthier. Many people are afraid to trust the Lord with everything; afraid that He will not provide for them. The Bible tells us that He takes care of the little sparrow and you are more important to God than many sparrows Matthew 10:29-31 People need not worry about material things the Lord knows what we need. Many of us have heard the saying, "His eye is on the sparrow" that originated from Bible verses. The Lord says do not worry because we are worth more than many sparrows. Matthew 10:31 We should not lust after the material things of this earth. The Lord knows we have needs and He is mindful of them! Matthew 6:8 Jesus Christ tells us ask anything in His name and He will do it. John 14:13 Now you make take the pop quiz (below) If you would like a printable version click on "Print It".
