The parable of the new cloth & wineskins were Jesus Christ's response to John's disciples when they noticed that Jesus did not fast like the pharisee's did. The pharisee's normally fasted two times a week and on all the traditional biblical holy days and was considered of utmost importance along with almsgiving and prayer in their religious rituals. Jesus gave the disciples these examples to help them understand why He nor they did not need to fast while he was with them. The parable Jesus told about new cloth & wine skins The disciples ask Jesus about fasting The disciples of John came to Jesus and asked, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but thy disciples fast not? Matthew 9:14 Jesus tells the disciples that they could not mourn for Him as long as He was still with them while warning them that He will be taken from them and that they should fast & mourn after He is taken from them. Jesus warns his disciples about his coming crucifixion and tells them to fast when He is no longer with them Traditionally the pharisees and people of various religions fasted when they were in mourning and on those days of the traditional Holy days which required it. Jesus spoke in parables comparing himself as the bridegroom and the disciples as the children of the bridechamber, in reference to the day when He would be sacrificed for our sins and would no longer be with them in human form but would remain with them in spirit. Jesus replied to them saying,"Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast. Matthew 9:15 New Cloth-The old should not be attached to new No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. Matthew 9:16 New Wine should be put in new bottles Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved" Matthew 9:17 Related Bible Verses:Matthew 9:17/Mark 2:22/Luke 5:37-38
